LULI will play an important role as a major laser ICF and IFE support facility in Europe after recent or future changes (ASTERIX-Garching, CEA-Limeil) in large laser system programs. We will review the research activities which have been carried out

An original synthetic aperture compressor scheme is proposed for multi-kilojoule petawatt beam. This scheme uses two compressor stages with multi-dielectric gratings allowing suppressing the mosaic of gratings. The main technical issues are detailed.

Sensitivity of alignment is one of the major issues in the stretcher-compressor devices used for chirped pulse amplification. In this paper we discuss the temporal aberrations induced by the different kinds of misalignments of the gratings and we emp

Synchronizing a picosecond laser pulse with a nanosecond one would be useful in laser fusion research. Amplitude modulation of a picosecond spectrum makes this possible; this passive technique has already been studied by C. Froehly and demonstrated b

We have measured the focusing properties of our chirped pulse amplification scheme which delivers 20 TW one-picosecond pulses. We have identified the imperfection in pulse compression gratings to be one of the major limitations and we show how to sol

We show that powerful femtosecond pulses can be obtained by use of a series of amplifying media with shifted but overlapping narrow gain bandwidth. This concept, based on chirped-pulse amplification in Nd:glass amplifiers, permits the generation of s

Femtosecond pulses in the 50–60-TW power range have been generated at 1064 nm by using the chirped-pulse-amplification technique applied to a Ti:sapphire/Nd:silicate glass (90-mm output aperture) power chain. We have identified the spectral gain na

We develop a model of nonlinear propagation of spatially incoherent beams to simulate recent experiments on Nd:glass amplifiers. It is shown that nonlinear losses when accompanied by an intensity-dependent index are enhanced in the case of incoherent

Pulses of 20-TW peak power have been generated at 1064 nm using the chirped-pulse-amplification technique with a 90-mm output-aperture Nd:silicate glass amplification line. This system delivers 60 J of energy in a chirped pulse of 600-psec duration,
