When solutions of [14C]glycollate, glycine, serine, glycerate, or glucose were supplied to segments of wheat leaves through their cut bases in the light, most of the 14C was incorporated into sucrose in air but in C02-free air less sucrose was made.

The incorporation of radioactive carbon into various photosynthetic products was investi gated with tomato plants in atmospheres containing between 40 and 1400 parts/106 carbon dioxide. A significantly greater proportion of 14C entered sucrose and al

The effect on the carbon metabolism of wheat leaf segments of certain inhibitors of photo respiration was studied. Sodium 2-hydroxy-3-butynoate supplied for 40 min resulted in accumulation of 14C in glycolic acid with only a 7% inhibition of photosyn

Experiments with Chlorella show that glycine and serine both become radioactive during photosynthetic incorporation of radioactive carbon dioxide. By contrast, when radioactive glucose is fed to Chlorella in the dark, alanine, glutamate, and aspartat

Blackman (1905) deduced from his study of the effect of external factors on the rate of photosynthesis that photosynthesis must include both photochemical and thermochemical processes. Later it appeared probable that the fixation of carbon dioxide wa

Particles separated from extracts of tobacco leaves by differential centrifugation catalysed the conversion of two molecules of glycine to one molecule of serine and one of carbon dioxide. The catalytic system was inhibited by inhibitors of the mitoc

Tobacco leaves were fractionated by the non-aqueous method after photosynthesis for short periods in l4C02 and with or without subsequent photosynthesis in 12C02 or respiration in the dark. Phosphate esters became labelled only slowly in the non-chlo
