Absorption measurements in 5 mol. % MgO-doped lithium niobate crystals (optical grade) are presented. Measurements reveal that optical losses in these crystals are mainly caused by H, Fe, Cu, Ni, Cr, and Mn impurities.

This contribution deals with light absorption and temperature-change-induced optical damage due to the pyroelectric effect in undoped and magnesium-doped lithium niobate crystals. This effect is different from the photorefractive optical damage.
