In rat islets, progesterone caused a prompt concentration-dependent inhibition of glucose-stimulated insulin release with an IC50 of 10 μM at 8.4 mM glucose. The inhibition was specific since both testosterone and 17β-estradiol had no such effect.

Summary Aim Islet dysfunction, characterized by the loss of an acute insulin secretory response (AIR) to glucose is a well-established pathology of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Using oral insulin secreting agents with very different pharmacodynamic prof

SUMMARY Aim Abnormal β-cell function, characterized as the inability of the β-cell to mount a rapid secretory response to glucose, is a well-established pathology of type 2 diabetes mellitus. These studies were designed to demonstrate the importanc

Administration of the murine-selective β3 adrenoceptor agonist CL-316,243 corrects obesity and elevated blood glucose in diabetic rodents. This antiobesity effect is attributed to an increase in the thermogenic activity of brown adipose tissue (BAT)

To investigate the role of 5-HT in human anxiety, the 5-HT releaser and uptake blocker d-fenfluramine (FEN) was administered to healthy volunteers under two models of experimental anxiety. The first was a simulated public speaking (SPS) test consisti

The role of insulin resistance in the impaired glucosestimulated insulin release of Zucker fatty rats was investigated using the insulin-sensitizing thiazolidinedione drug pioglitazone. Fatty rats had fasting hyperinsulinemia yet a blunted secretory

The long-term effects of continuous and pulsatile glucose stimulation of islets of Langerhans microdissected from Syrian hamsters were examined. In the presence of a continuous glucose stimulus insulin secretion peaked during the first 3 h of stimula
