Since an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, predicted by Einstein in 1925, was first produced in the laboratory in 1995, the study of ultracold Bose and Fermi gases has become one of the most active areas in contemporary physics. This book explains phe

In 1925 Einstein predicted that at low temperatures particles in a gas could all reside in the same quantum state. This gaseous state, a Bose–Einstein condensate, was produced in the laboratory for the first time in 1995 and investigating such cond

We calculate the superfluid density of nucleons in disordered pasta phases in the inner crust of neutron stars using an effective medium approach which parallels that previously used for calculating the electrical conductivity of terrestrial matter.
This chapter surveys the current status of understanding of pairing and superfluidity of neutrons and protons in neutron stars from a theoretical perspective, with emphasis on basic physical properties. During the past two decades, the blossoming of

We give a quantitative account of the ground-state properties of the dilute magnetically trapped $^{87}$Rb gas recently cooled and Bose-Einstein condensed at nanokelvin-scale temperatures. Using simple scaling arguments, we show that at large particl

Over the past quarter of a century, the challenge of understanding the properties of neutron stars has been a powerful stimulus to studies of neutron-rich matter. This review considers neutron-rich mltter at subnuclear densities. Under these condi

Conditions in neutron stars are more extreme than almost any encountered on Earth: densities exceed those of atomic nuclei, and matter has a large neutron excess. During the past quarter of a century, the challenge of understanding neutron stars has

The topic of Bose–Einstein condensation in a uniform, non-interacting gas of bosons is treated in most textbooks on statistical mechanics. In the present chapter we discuss the properties of a non-interacting Bose gas in a trap. We shall calculate
