Abstract In biological tissues, 19F magnetic resonance (MR) enables the non-invasive, background-free detection of 19F-containing biomarkers. However, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is usually low because biomarkers are typically present at low conc

High-velocity clouds (HVCs) are defined by their high radial velocities which are incompatible with a participation in the normal rotation of our Galaxy. They are observed mainly in the 21 cm line of neutral hydrogen. HVCs can be found all over the s

We use 50 (candidate) background X-ray sources (AGN) in the LMC field observed in ROSAT PSPC observations to derive the observed log N - log S relation. We correct for the varying PSPC exposure and the absorption due to the galactic and the LMC gas.

Suicide mortality rates are a strong indicator of population mental-health and can be used to determine the efficacy of prevention measures. Monitoring suicide mortality rates in real-time provides an evidence-base to inform targeted interventions in

Introduction/AimData visualisation is key to informing data-driven decision-making, yet this is an underexplored area of suicide surveillance. By way of enhancing a real-time suicide surveillance system model, an interactive dashboard prototype has b

Extended stellar clusters with effective radii larger than 10 pc have been found in various environments. Objects with masses comparable to globular clusters (GCs) are called extended clusters (ECs), while objects with masses in the dwarf galaxy regi

At least 50% of the baryons in the local universe are undetected and predicted to be in a hot dilute phase (1E5-1E7 K) in low and moderate overdensity environments. We searched for the predicted diffuse faint emission through shadowing observations w

One of the currently most favoured cosmological models is the so-called ΛCDM model which predicts a hierarchical formation of gravitationally bound structures in the universe. A major problem of the ΛCDM scenario is that the number of low-mass dark

Relics of structure formation: extra-planar gas and high-velocity clouds around the Andromeda Galaxy
Using the 100-m radio telescope at Effelsberg, we mapped a large area around the Andromeda Galaxy in the 21-cm line emission of neutral hydrogen to search for high-velocity clouds (HVCs) out to large projected distances in excess of 100 kpc. Our 3-si
