In this paper we report on the fabrication and the characterization of RE activated colloidal nano and micro spheres considering two different systems: (i) Er3+-activated silica microresonators and (ii) Er3+ doped core-shell silica monosize spheres.

Low losses erbium activated silica-hafnia glass-ceramics waveguides were fabricated by the bottom up technique. Analysis of the luminescence properties has demonstrated that erbium ions are embedded in a crystalline phase.
