This work presents the design of a smart activation system for the crack-closure technology of the Hybrid Tendons. Previous research has demonstrated the effectiveness of this technology in providing a self-repairing mechanism for concrete elements.

Shape memory polymer (SMP) products have been developed for application as crack closure devices in concrete. They have been made from PET in the form of both fibres and hollow tubes. Here, manufacturing methods using die-drawing and mandrel-drawing

The assessment of rainfall-induced shallow landslide hazards at the catchment scale poses a significant challenge. Traditional empirical approaches for landslide hazard assessment often assume that conditions having caused failure in the past will no

Formation of cracks represents one of the major causes of concrete deterioration, which can lead to durability and safety issues. In this work, a novel crack closure system is developed, using polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymer fibres embedded

Rainfall-induced diffuse shallow landslides are one of the most critical natural hazards as they often evolve into highly destructive flow slides and debris flows. Vegetation is recognized to play a key role in landslide occurrence and is frequently

The in-situ monitoring of soil suction and water content is important for a range of applications from civil engineering (e.g. estimation of groundwater infiltration) to agriculture (e.g. optimization of irrigation). The efficiency of field monitorin

The paper presents a new healing system that uses pre-tensioned hybrid tendons to close cracks in cementitious structural elements. The tendons comprise an inner core, formed from aramid fibre ropes, and an outer sleeve made from a shape memory PET.

The 1997 winter season recorded prolonged and intense rainfalls all over the Campania region in Italy. As a result, a large number of extremely rapid debris-earth flow-like landslides were triggered. These phenomena occurred in the late Quaternary vo

Granular ‘cohesionless’ soils above the water table are partially saturated but are commonly assumed to be dry in geotechnical practice. Accordingly, ‘drained’ shear strength is calculated by replacing the ‘saturated’ effective stress wit
