Modelling transport and mixing by turbulence in complex flows are huge challenges for computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This highly readable book introduces readers to modelling levels that respect the physical complexity of turbulent flows. It exa

Over a remarkably productive professional life Brian Spalding largely shaped the development of numerical procedures for computing complex turbulent flows. He created a major software company, CHAM, through which the fruits of his group's research co

This paper examines the evolution of closing the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations by approximating the Reynolds stresses via the second-moment transport equations themselves. This strategy first proposed by Rotta is markedly in contrast to

The paper examines aspects of the career of Professor Sir Horace Lamb, FRS, a highly regarded classical fluid mechanicist, who, over a period of some thirty-five years at Manchester, made notable contributions in research, in education and in wise ad

The paper reports experiences from applying alternative strategies for modelling turbulent flow and local heat-transfer coefficients around in-line tube banks. The motivation is the simulation of conditions in the closely packed cross-flow heat excha

The paper examines, by way of a 3-dimensional, unsteady-RANS analysis, the high-Reynolds-number turbulent flow normal to a cylinder rotating about its axis, thus continuing the re-evaluation of this flow configuration as a potential means of providin

This paper examines a succession of incidents at a critical juncture in the life of Professor Horace Lamb FRS, a highly regarded classical fluid mechanicist, who, over a period of some 35 years at Manchester, made notable contributions in research, i

The idea behind the marine cloud-brightening (MCB) geoengineering technique is that seeding marine stratocumulus clouds with copious quantities of roughly monodisperse sub-micrometre sea water particles might significantly enhance the cloud droplet n

Progress is reported on the modelling, via RANS closures, of two swirling turbulent flows important in aeronautics: the trailing wing-tip vortex and the flow in rotor-stator cavities. For the former the decay of the vortex is only well captured at se
