Quantum dots (QDs) are of high interest in the biomedical field. The most widely used and commercially available CdSe/ZnS QDs have a highly toxic Cd component. High-efficiency luminescent Cd-free Mn-doped ZnSe/ZnS QDs are a reasonable alternative to

Lanthanide fluoride colloidal nanocrystals offer a way to improve the diagnosis and treatment of cancer through the enhanced absorption of ionizing radiation, in addition to providing visible luminescence. In order to explore this possibility, tests

Naturally occurring dysprosium is attractive as a neutron detector because of its high thermal neutron capture cross section and high natural abundance. Neutron-induced transmutation of 164Dy results in production of stable isotopes of holmium and er

We have synthesized ZnSe:Mn/ZnS doped core/shell nanocrystals with 91% quantum efficiency at the 497 nm emission with 453 nm excitation. Combined with their high temperature stability, this makes them very attractive as nanophosphors for white LEDs.

We propose a novel concept of optical detection of thermal neutrons in a passive device that exploits transmutation of Dy-164, a dominant, naturally occurring isotope of dysprosium, into a stable isotope of either holmium Ho-165 or erbium Er-166. Com
