1. The alkylation reaction of brevicarine have been studied in detail. The structural formula I proposed for brevicarine [1-methyl-4-(4-methylaminobutyl)-β-carboline] has been confirmed by NMR and mass spectroscopy.

The brevicarine obtained by the cleavage of the pyrrolidine ring of brevicolline is identical with the natural alkaloid, which is an additional proof of its structure.
