Isolated trout hepatocytes when swollen in hypotonic medium undergo a regulatory volume decrease (RVD), which occurs via KCl loss. The system shows characteristics similar to those of the transporter described in red cells. This led us to investigate

The ability of fish to osmoregulate in freshwater, in seawater and, occasionally, in other salt media, is ensured by the transport activity of several epithelia. Among these tissues, the intestine is also involved in nutrition and the two major funct

Adenylate cyclase activity was measured on membrane fractions from the gill epithelium of rainbow trout Salmo gairdneri. Basal and glucagon-stimulated activities responded negatively to homologous neurohypophyseal peptides (arginine-vasotocin and iso

Na+, K+ exchanges were studied in isolated hepatocytes of the rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri. Ouabain at 10(-4) M produced maximal inhibition (95%) of K+ uptake and enhanced intracellular Na+ accumulation, showing that active fluxes account for a ver

1. 1. Secretion of cortisol by the interrenal tissue of the trout Salmo gairdneri was studied in vitro by a perifusion method in relation to the effects of electrolyte concentrations in the medium. 2. 2. An increase in osmotic pressure (produced by a

1. 1. The cellular uptake of [3H]cortisol has been studied on hepatocytes isolated from the trout Salmo gairdneri irideus. 2. 2. Analysis of the uptake as a function of concentration indicated the presence of a low affinity saturable system (Km=60 μ

SUMMARY Plasma cortisol concentrations, measured by competitive protein-binding, were examined in intact and hypophysectomized goldfish (Carassius auratus L.) adapted to fresh water or to 210 mm-sodium chloride solutions. The mean plasma cortisol con

Hypophysectomized goldfish ( Carassius auratus L.) kept for 3 weeks in fresh water show a sharp decrease (35% or more) in plasma Na and Cl concentrations. Due to expansion of the apparent Na space, however, total exchangeable Na drops only about 20%.

1. 1. Goldfish were adapted to diluted sea water (190 m-equiv./1 of Na) which was hyperosmotic to plasma from fresh-water-adapted fish. Fish survive well in this medium but plasma Na levels rise to equal those of the environment and exchangeable Na i
