Background: Short-term forecasts of infectious disease burden can contribute to situational awareness and aid capacity planning. Based on best practice in other fields and recent insights in infectious disease epidemiology, one can maximise the predi

In this work we study the problem of first order perturbations of a general hypersurface, i.e. with arbitrary causal character at each point. We extend the framework by Mars (2005 Class. Quantum Grav. 22 3325-48) where this problem was studied to sec

We characterise the geometrical nature of smooth supertranslations defined on a generic non-expanding horizon (NEH) embedded in vacuum. To this end we consider the constraints imposed by the vacuum Einstein's equations on the NEH structure, and discu

In a recent paper we applied a rigorous perturbed matching framework to show the amendment of the mass of rotating stars in Hartle's model. Here, we apply this framework to the tidal problem in binary systems. Our approach fully accounts for the corr

Hartle's model for slowly rotating stars has been extensively used to compute equilibrium configurations of slowly rotating stars to second order in perturbation theory in General Relativity, given a barotropic equation of state (EOS). A recent study

The junction conditions for the most general gravitational theory with a Lagrangian containing terms quadratic in the curvature are derived. We include the cases with a possible concentration of matter on the joining hypersurface -termed as thin shel

Hartle's model provides the most widely used analytic framework to describe isolated compact bodies rotating slowly in equilibrium up to second order in perturbations in the context of General Relativity. Apart from some explicit assumptions, there a

Hartle's model describes the equilibrium configuration of a rotating isolated compact body in perturbation theory up to second order in General Relativity. The interior of the body is a perfect fluid with a barotropic equation of state, no convective

The key paper that has served as the basis for the models describing the equilibrium configuration of a rotating isolated compact body using perturbation theory in General Relativity is due to Hartle (Astrophys J 150:1005–1029, 1967). Apart from a

We show how the correction to the calculation of the mass in the original relativistic model of a rotating star by Hartle [6], found recently [10], appears in the Newtonian limit, and that the correcting term is indeed present, albeit hidden, in the
