This paper describes the design of MEFISTO (Mercury Electric Field In-Situ Tool) and WPT (Wire Probe Antenna) electric field sensors for Plasma Wave Investigation (PWI) on the BepiColombo Mio spacecraft (Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter, MMO). The two

Generated by interplanetary shocks or solar wind pressure pulses, shock aurora has transient, global, and dynamic significances and provides a direct manifestation of the solar wind‐magnetosphere‐ionosphere interaction. As a part of a series of s

In this paper, we present observations of cold (0–70 eV) plasma density in the magnetotail lobes. The observations and results are based on 16 years of Cluster observation of spacecraft potential measurements converted into local plasma densities.

The QB50 mission is a satellite constellation designed to carry out measurements at between 200–380 km altitude in the ionosphere. The multi-needle Langmuir probe (m-NLP) instrument has been mounted on board eleven QB50 satellites in order to chara

A two-step procedure to calibrate the spectral sensitivity to visible light of auroral all-sky cameras is outlined. Center pixel response is obtained by the use of a Lambertian surface and a standard 45W tungsten lamp. Screen brightness is regulated

On July 14th, 2017, the first Norwegian scientific satellite NorSat-1 was launched into a high-inclination (98∘), low-Earth orbit (600 km altitude) from Baikonur, Kazakhstan. As part of the payload package, NorSat-1 carries the multi-needle Langmui

When the interplanetary magnetic field is northward, reconnection occurs in each hemisphere on lobe field lines, poleward of the cusp. We have identified a case where the Cluster spacecraft crossed the magnetopause and encountered a tailward retreati

Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Coupling in the Solar System
A significant amount of mass is lost from the Earth's atmosphere through ions escaping from the polar ionosphere. Due to spacecraft charging effects, in situ measurements using traditional plasma instruments are typically not able to detect the low e
