We create a one-dimensional photonic crystal with strong polarization dependence and tunable by an applied electric field. We accomplish this in a planar microcavity by embedding a cholesteric liquid crystal (LC), which spontaneously forms a uniform

Topological physics relies on the existence of Hamiltonian's eigenstate singularities carrying a topological charge, such as quantum vortices, Dirac points, Weyl points and -- in non-Hermitian systems -- exceptional points (EPs), lines or surfaces. T

Spin-orbit interactions which couple spin of a particle with its momentum degrees of freedom lie at the center of spintronic applications. Of special interest in semiconductor physics are Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling (SOC). When equal i

Multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates, quantum Hall systems, and chiral magnetic materials display twists and knots in the continuous symmetries of their order parameter, known as Skyrmions. Originally discovered as solutions to the nonlinear sigm

The optical reflectivity of Pb$_{0.865}$Sn$_{0.135}$Se and Pb$_{0.75}$Sn$_{0.25}$Se solid solutions was measured in the THz spectral region energetically corresponding to bulk optical phonon excitations and in the temperature range from 40 K to 280 K

We present a comprehensive analytical model of resonant states in birefringent microcavities with permeable mirrors. We derive an effective, non-Hermitian photonic Hamiltonian describing cavity mode dispersion and modal lifetimes by applying the Gree

The authors study a liquid crystal microcavity with polarization-dependent absorption, a source of non-Hermiticity. The transition in the Hermitian topology of the spin-orbit coupling makes possible the annihilation of exceptional points.
