OBJECTIVE. To investigate whether it was possible to promote placental blood transfer to infants at preterm delivery by (1) delaying cord clamping, (2) holding the infant below the placenta, and (3) administering an oxytocic agent to the mother, we m

At 30 weeks' gestation, half of the approximately 110 ml/kg total blood volume (BV) of the feto-placental circulation is in the fetus, rising, by term, to about 90 ml/kg. In preterm infants at birth, subnormal blood volume is the rule, because of imm

Determination of circulating red cell volume (RCV) in anemic preterm infants is, in theory, a better indicator of transfusion needs than Hb concentration. Our study reports the results of RCV measurement using biotin labeling of red cells on 40 occas

The anaemias of prematurity are characterized by inadequate erythropoietin response and require frequent transfusions. Methods: In a 12 centre blinded trial, VLBW infants were randomized into rhEPO (n = 120) or control group (n = 121) on day 3 of lif

Short gestation correlates with impairments in red cell filterability at birth. We used Nuclepore blood cell suspension filtration (Jones et al, 1985). There was no correlation between pore occupation time and mean red cell volume or leukocyte count.

Top of pageAbstract Today's tiny babies need frequent red cell transfusions (Tx). If inadequate red cells are Tx on each occasion, the donors and so infective hazards, are aultiplied. The objective of Tx is to achieve normal circulating red cell mass
