As part of the Southern California Air Quality Study (SCAQS), nitrous acid (HONO) measurements were made at Long Beach, CA during the period 11 November–12 December 1987, using two distinctly different techniqes. One of these, the annular denuder m

The denuder difference method (DDM) for HNO 3 , involving two nylon filter samplers, one of which is preceded by an acid-gas denuder, can also provide measurements of acidic, gaseous chloride, likely to be HCl, at ambient atmospheric concentrations.

Particulate air pollution samples collected on glass fiber filters were analysed using computer-controlled high-resolution mass spectrometric thermal analysis. Samples were collected during a smog episode in the summer of 1973 at a photochemical smog

A laboratory and field study was performed to assess the contribution to visibility reduction of both light scattering and absorption by air pollutant particles and gases. Gaseous precursors to important visibility-reducing aerosol species were measu

A laboratory and field study was conducted to evaluate artifact nitrate formation on filter media. The filter media evaluated included a cellulose acetate, a Teflon, a cellulose and five types of glass fiber filters covering a pH range from 4.6 to 9.

Methods for the measurement of nitric acid, particulate nitrate and total inorganic nitrate (i.e. HNO3 plus particulate nitrate) are compared using atmospheric samples from the Los Angeles Basin. Nitric acid was measured by (1) the nitrate collected

The efficiency of hi-vol samplers with glass fiber filters for collection of atmospheric arsenic was assessed by parallel sampling with a technique able to retain both particle and gas-phase arsenic trioxide. Sampling was done adjacent to the Kenneco
