The endogenous gibberellins (GAs) of maize have been extensively studied by Phinney and his co-workers.1–4 These investigations were based on the use of single-gene dwarf mutants that control specific steps in the GA biosynthetic pathway for maize.

The purpose of this paper is to present and analyze selected information concerning genetic dwarfism in maize. This includes the current status of the GA mutants and the description and evaluation of selected dwarf mutants that do not respond to GAs.

GA20-13-0-glucoside (7a) and GA20 glucosyl ester (6a), potential endogenous conjugates in maize, were synthesized chemically. The biological activities of these compounds and of nine more GA glucosyl derivatives were determined using theZea mays dwar

Evidence is presented to support the generalization that gibberellin A1 is the main ‘gibberellin hormone’ that is activeper se in the control of elongation growth in higher plants. The evidence is based on a combination of chemical and genetic st

After feeding GA20 to excised seedlings ofZea mays L. normals (N) and dwarf-1 mutants (d1), GA20-13-O-glucoside (9) was identified by HPLC and by GC-MS of its permethylated derivative. The glucosylation rate of GA20 was found to be higher in the dwar

Single gene dwarf mutants have been used to unravel the GA biosynthetic pathway in shoots of Zea mays (maize) [18, 19]. These GA mutants have provided critical evidence leading to the conclusion that GA1 is the main endogenous gibberellin active per
