We present a description of the prototype interferometric gravitational wave detector at Glasgow. The detector, which has been under development for a number of years, consists of two perpendicular 10‐m‐long high finesse Fabry–Perot cavities fo

An automatic alignment system, based on a differential phase-sensing technique described in a companion paper [Appl. Opt. 33, 0000, (1994)], has been experimentally demonstrated on the 10-m prototype laser interferometric gravitational wave detector

The performance of the present interferometers using resonant cavities is continually improving and prospects for the detection of predicted sources of radiation with interferometers of longer baselines seem most encouraging.

The statistical theory of signal detection and the estimation of its parameters are reviewed and applied to the case of detection of the gravitational-wave signal from a coalescing binary by a laser interferometer. The correlation integral and the co

We propose a new method of operating laser interferometric gravitational-wave detectors when observing [ital chirps] of gravitational radiation from coalescing compact binary stars. This technique consists of the use of narrow-band dual recycling to

We discuss the generation of quantum noise in interferometers. A heuristic model is described that enables different characteristics of the noise to be understood and calculated. In particular, the effects of modulation on signal and noise in interfe

We discuss the limitations placed upon the sensitivity of laser-interferometric gravitational-wave detectors by imperfections in the shape or alignment of the optics, for various different detector configurations. Wave-front distortion is seen to be
