We have measured the rectification of far-infrared radiation resonant with the lowest intersubband transition of an AlGa/AsGaAs asymmetric coupled double-quantum well in which the subband spacing is 11 meV. From these measurements we can extract an i

A realistic model of a doped quantum well heterostructure exhibits a subharmonic signal in the presence of intense far-infrared radiation. Nonlinearity enters the model through the effective potential due to the density of electrons in the well. Deph

We have experimentally measured the 1--2 intersubband absorption in a single 40 nm wide modulation-doped ${\mathrm{Al}}_{0.3}{\mathrm{Ga}}_{0.7}\mathrm{As}/\mathrm{GaAs}$ square quantum well as a function of frequency, intensity, and charge density.

The periodically driven particle in a box serves as a starting point for the qualitative analysis of nonintegrable systems, and as a simple model of semiconductor quantum wells exposed to intense far-infrared radiation. Classically, the phase space c

We discuss recent measurements of the nonlinear response of electrons in wide quantum wells driven by intense electromagnetic radiation at terahertz frequencies. The theme is the interplay of quantum mechanics, strong periodic driving, the electron-e

We report intersubband-scattering times $({T}_{1})$ in a semiconductor heterostructure with intersubband spacing below the LO phonon energy. ${T}_{1}$ is determined by simultaneous measurements of the intersubband absorption and the photovoltage indu

A technology gap exists between ∼ 100 GHz and ∼ 10 THz. Free-electron lasers (FELs), driven by high quality, relatively low energy electron beams from electrostatic accelerators, and capable of generating kilowatts of coherent, tunable radiation,

Energy absorption characteristics are computed for a classical and a quantum model of an infinite square well, as a function of driving amplitude and frequency. Nonperturbative resonances are observed corresponding to the replacement of states locali

We describe a statistical approach for identifying nonlinearity in time series. The method first specifies some linear process as a null hypothesis, then generates surrogate data sets which are consistent with this null hypothesis, and finally comput
