This paper reviews properties and use of conventional single-mode dispersion-compensating fibers (DCFs). The quality of the dispersion compensation expressed as residual dispersion after compensation is treated. Properties of actual DCFs for discrete

A method to measure strain in optical fibers using modal interference is proposed. The method is used to investigate fiber stress when the fiber is covered by a heat shrink sleeve, a so-called splice protector commonly used to protect fusion splices.

The basic principles for use of dispersion compensating fibers (DCF) are reviewed, including definition of figure of merit and condition for dispersion slope compensation. The main design features of a triple-cladding index profile design are examine

We report transmission of 1.6 Tb/s (160/spl times/10.7 Gb/s) over 4000 km of nonzero dispersion fiber at 25-GHz channel spacing using 100-km amplified spans. Without polarization interleaving and per-channel post dispersion compensation, all channels

The polarization properties of Bi/sub 12/SiO/sub 20/ (BSO) crystals are investigated in detail theoretically and experimentally, and the results are used to describe the operation of an optical correlator for a particle image velocimeter (PIV) using

We demonstrate a single-ended colorless coherent receiver using symmetric 3×3 coupler hybrids. This allows for colorless reception of fifty-five 112-Gb/s PDM-QPSK channels with 1-dB penalty and the receiver works well in transmission over 2560-km Tr

The negative dispersion slope of dispersion-compensating fibers has been optimized by increasing the width of the depressed cladding. Simultaneous compensation and dispersion slope has been demonstrated on an actual link.

Summary form only given. We report results of large volume production of more than 10000 km of dispersion-compensating fibers (DCF). This is equivalent to more than 1000 modules, which each can compensate 60 km of standard fiber. Reproducible large v

A new dispersion compensating fiber with extremely high negative dispersion slope is reported. Low insertion loss between 1530 and 1610 nm is demonstrated using a new splice technique.
