4-Nitro-2,2′-bipyridyl 1-oxide has been used to prepare several 4-substituted 2,2′-bipyridyls and their 1-oxides. The infrared and electronic spectra of these compounds and their basicities are recorded and discussed.

3-Amino- and 3-nitro-4-pyridone are shown to exist in the pyridone form by factors of 104·6: 1 and 103·4: 1, respectively.
