The influence of contaminants is one of the factors hindering self-sustained thermonuclear burn in inertial confinement fusion. Here, the authors present evidence, through simulations and experiments, that contaminants do not fully reach thermal equi

According to Einstein’s general theory of relativity, a clock runs more slowly if it is close to a large gravitating object. This principle was highlighted in the movie “Interstellar,” in which the main character spends several hours on a plane

The objective of this study was to determine the influence of a dual respiratory and enteric pathogen challenge on growth performance, carcass composition, and pork quality of high and low feed efficient pigs. Pigs divergently selected for low and hi

We have examined fine-structure mixing between the rubidium $5^{2}P_{3/2}$ and $5^{2}P_{1/2}$ states along with quenching of these states due to collisions with methane gas. Measurements are carried out using ultrafast laser pulse excitation to popul

General relativity predicts that clocks run more slowly near massive objects. The effect is small---a clock at sea level lags behind one 1000 m above sea level by only 9.4 ns/day. Here, we demonstrate that a measurement of this effect can be done by

The cesium 6${P}_{3/2}$ excited-state lifetime is measured using ultrafast laser pulse excitation and ionization in counterpropagating thermal atomic beams achieving an overall uncertainty of 0.15%, which represents a modest improvement over the best
