The flow rate of a granulate out of a cylindrical container is studied as a function of particle shape for flat and elongated ellipsoids experimentally and numerically. We find a nonmonotonic dependence of the flow rate on the grain aspect ratio a/b.

The behavior of non-spherical particles in a shear-flow is of significant practical and theoretical interest. These systems have been the object of numerous investigations since the pioneering work of Jeffery a century ago. His eponymous orbits descr

We investigate the force of flowing granular material on an obstacle. A sphere suspended in a discharging silo experiences both the weight of the overlaying layers and drag of the surrounding moving grains. In experiments with frictional hard glass b

Shear induced orientational ordering of asymmetric elongated particles is investigated experimentally. Corn grains and pegs with one end sharpened are studied using X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) during quasistatic shearing and silo discharge. We sho

The flow of elliptical particles out of a 2-dimensional silo when extracted with a conveyor belt is analyzed experimentally. The conveyor belt - placed directly below the silo outlet - reduces the flow rate, increases the size of the stagnant zone, a

The discharge of elongated particles from a silo with rotating bottom is investigated numerically. The introduction of a slight transverse shear reduces the flow rate $Q$ by up to 70% compared to stationary bottom, but the flow rate shows a modest in

We present a carrier-envelope offset (CEO) stable ytterbium-doped fiber chirped-pulse amplification system employing the technology of coherent beam combining and delivering more than 1 kW of average power at a pulse repetition rate of 80 MHz. The CE

We study the flow of elongated grains (wooden pegs of length $L$=20 mm with circular cross section of diameter $d_c$=6 and 8 mm) from a silo with a rotating bottom and a circular orifice of diameter $D$. In the small orifice range ($D/d<5$) clogs are

Very recently, To et al.~have experimentally explored granular flow in a cylindrical silo, with a bottom wall that rotates horizontally with respect to the lateral wall \cite{Kiwing2019}. Here, we numerically reproduce their experimental findings, in

Granular flow out of a silo is studied experimentally and numerically. The time evolution of the discharge rate as well as the normal force (apparent weight) at the bottom of the container is monitored. We show, that particle stiffness has a strong e
