Summary: Many favorable metabolic effects have been attributed to thermogenic activity of brown adipose tissue (BAT). Yet, time of day has rarely been considered in this field of research. Here, we show that a diurnal rhythm in BAT activity regulates

The central circadian clock, located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) within the brain, regulates daily patterns of activity and physiology. Many studies indicate that exercise at certain times of the day is beneficial for maintaining circadian h

Significance Synchronization of our biological clocks to the environmental day–night cycle critically depends on daily exposure to light. Here, we show that cones transmit distinct photic information to the clock by performing recordings of clock n

Artificial light exposure is associated with dyslipidemia in humans, which is a major risk factor for the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. However, it remains unclear whether artificial light at night can exacerbate atherosclero

In mammals, the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) contains a central clock that synchronizes daily (i.e., 24-h) rhythms in physiology and behavior. SCN neurons are cell-autonomous oscillators that act synchronously to produce a coherent circadian rhythm.

Background: Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is an attractive anti-dyslipidemia target as it burns high amounts of triglycerides (TG) into heat. In humans, plasma TG levels display 24 h variation independent of food intake, indicating a strong regulation b

Aging is associated with a deterioration of daily (circadian) rhythms in physiology and behavior. Deficits in the function of the central circadian pacemaker in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) have been implicated, but the responsible mechanisms ha
