At the end of the 1980´s particulates and sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) were the main atmospheric pollutants in the Mexico City Metropolitan Zone (MCMZ). To reduce emissions, fuel oil was replaced by natural gas at power plants located inside Mexico City.
