Here, we describe a spontaneous mouse mutant with a deletion in a predicted gene 2310061I04Rik (Rik) of unknown function located on chromosome 17. A 59 base pair long deletion occurred in the first intron of the Rik gene and disrupted its expression.

BackgroundAlthough visceral pain of gastrointestinal (GI) origin is the major complaint in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) it remains poorly understood. Brain imaging studies suggest a defect in brain-gut communication in IBS with a grea

Background: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is characterized by visceral pain and abnormal bowel habits that are worsened during stress. Evidence also suggests altered intestinal barrier function in IBS. Previously, we demonstrated that stereotaxic ap

Visceral pain is generally poorly localized and characterized by hypersensitivity to a stimulus such as organ distension. In concert with chronic visceral pain, there is a high comorbidity with stress-related psychiatric disorders including anxiety a

Through the gut-brain axis, the microorganisms that reside in the gut are able to exert an important influence on the central nervous system. Preclinical and clinical evidence suggests that alterations in the composition of the gut microbiota are inv

This chapter will discuss key mechanisms that influence the bidirectional communication between the gastrointestinal (GI) system and the central nervous system (CNS). The interaction between the GI tract and the CNS is complex. At the level of the GI

Evidence suggests that long-term stress facilitates visceral pain through sensitization of pain pathways and promotes chronic visceral pain disorders such as the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This review will describe the importance of stress in ex
