Main chain liquid crystal elastomers exhibit several interesting phenomena, such as three different regimes of elastic response, unconventional stress-strain relationship in one of these regimes, and the shape memory effect. Investigations are beginn

The auxeticity of a stiff felt nonwoven was enhanced from its as-received (AR) state using a heated compression treatment (TR). Tensegrity elements in the structure, fiber columns and constrained fibers, were deemed responsible for its auxeticity.

Advances in the field of auxetics have realized fabricated auxetic materials such as foams, fabrics, and fibers as well as a better theoretical understanding of the auxetic response. Because of their unique properties and applications, commodity auxe

We have examined the effect of temperature, pressure, and time on the magnitude of induced auxetic response in post-manufacture-processed needle-punched nonwovens. Different combinations of these processing parameters – temperatures ranging from ro

We describe here a heat-compression protocol used on needle-punched commercial nonwoven fabrics which induces an out-of-plane auxetic response in these treated fabrics. The as-received samples, however, are not auxetic and show a decrease in thicknes

The relationship between strain-dependent macroscopic elastic behavior and the changes in microscopic structure of the smectic-C liquid crystal elastomer (LCE), C11MeHQSi8 were investigated using synchrotron X-ray studies. At very low strains e ≤ 0

The objective of this research is to understand more fully the out-of-plane auxetic behavior of paper. In the reported research, initial characterization of the auxetic properties of common, commercially available papers is described. The results of
