Long distance interfaces between superconducting quantum information processing nodes would require coherent, efficient and low-noise microwave-to-optical conversion. Here, the authors use Yb ion ensembles in yttrium orthovanadate to demonstrate a tr

We implement a nuclear spin-wave quantum register for optically-addressable 171Yb3+ qubits in YVO4 using a local ensemble of 51V5+ lattice ions. This quantum mem-ory is a critical demonstration for future rare-earth ion-based quantum repeater network

We demonstrate coherent optical control of single Yb3+ ions in YVO4 coupled evanescently to a GaAs photonic crystal cavity.
Solid-state nuclear spins surrounding individual, optically addressable qubits provide a crucial resource for quantum networks, computation and simulation. While hosts with sparse nuclear spin baths are typically chosen to mitigate qubit decoherence,

Rare-earth ions embedded in crystals are promising optically addressable spin qubits. We demonstrate this potential by measuring the optical and spin transition properties of single 171Yb3+ ions coupled to nanophotonic resonators fabricated in YVO4.
