The development of optics that provide spatial control of birefringence could enable better control of laser beam polarization, but available solutions are limited. Here we demonstrate a method to locally modify the birefringence of wave plates fabri

Contamination of pulse compression gratings during the manufacturing process is known to give rise to reduced laser damage performance and represents an issue that has not yet been adequately resolved. The present work demonstrates that the currently

Laser systems capable of delivering energetic nanosecond pulses with large incoherent bandwidth spanning more than 10 THz are currently under development for the study of laser–plasma instabilities. A consequence of such a spectrum is random intens

We investigate contamination induced in grating-like structures during the etching process as a possible precursor to laser-induced damage. Our experimental model utilizes 5-mm line structures fabricated in E-beam–deposited coatings of silica using

Understanding of the laser-induced damage threshold and impact of air–vacuum cycling of the optical components in short-pulse laser systems is of fundamental importance. We report the results of a damage-testing campaign that monitored representati

The modifications of multilayer dielectric (MLD) gratings arising from laser-induced damage using 0.6-ps and 10-ps laser pulses at 1053 nm are investigated to better understand the damage-initiation mechanisms. Upon damage initiation, sections of the

Laser-induced damage remains a key limiting factor for laser system performance. This presentation will review three main issues associated with laser-induced damage: (1) The processes involved leading to material modification, (2) the damage-initiat

The robust-optimization algorithm is validated for the laser-induced damage threshold of multilayer-dielectric mirrors. The robust design approach shows a significant improvement compared to the classical design, validating our calculation method.
