Inputs of new nitrogen by cyanobacterial diazotrophs are critical to ocean ecosystem structure and function. Relative to other ocean regions, there is a lack of data on the distribution of these microbes in the western South Atlantic. Here, the abund

Dense slicks of Trichodesmium were found in the shelf-break region in the Southwestern Atlantic during austral spring and autumn. A total of 14 slicks were sampled, and the absorption coefficients of phytoplankton (aph(λ)) indicated clear spectral f

We report Trichodesmium slicks in the South Atlantic associated with fronts produced by the southward displacement of the Brazil Current. For the first time, a relatively high spatial sampling grid of trichomes density is shown over an undersampled r

In waters surrounding James Ross Island (JRI), which is generally inaccessible, high chlorophyll-a concentration [Chla] can often be detected during summer periods by ocean color imagery. The region is influenced by a retreating sea ice edge from Wed

Harmful Trichodesmium blooms have been reported on the continental slope of the southwestern South Atlantic Ocean; we sampled six such blooms. The highest saxitoxin concentration was observed where the number of colonies was proportionally greater re

Microalgae are unicellular organisms that have different shapes, sizes and structures. Classifying these microalgae manually can be an expensive task, because thousands of microalgae can be found in even a small sample of water. This paper presents a
