Simple alkyl sulfides and disulfides have been photolysed at 253.7 nm in dilute rigid glasses of 3-methylpentane, and the reactions which occur both at 77 K and in the glass at higher temperatures have been studied using epr and optical spectroscopy.

Within the 20–80°C temperature range, the rate constants and activation energies were measured for hydrogen atoms reacting with hydrogen peroxide ( k = 5.0 × 10 7 mol -1 dm 3 s -1 , E act = 16.4 kJ mol -1 ), molecular oxygen ( k = 1.35 × 10 10 m

De-aerated 0.4 mol dm -3 H 2 SO 4 solutions containing either 0.01 mol dm -3 ferrous sulphate or 0.1 mol dm -3 CH 3 OH (or CD 3 OH) were irradiated at room temperature and at 300°C. In the case of CH 3 OH, G(H 2 ) was 4.33 ± 0.22 and 5.10 ± 0.16 a

The reaction of cis- and trans-9-octadecenoic acid monolayers with acidic permanganate solutions has been characterized by fitting rate constants to the time dependence of the apparent surface area. The results indicate that: the rate of oxidation of

When deoxygenated aqueous sodium nitrate solutions containing an alcohol as a hydroxyl radical scavenger are irradiated, [Formula: see text] depends on the fraction of [Formula: see text] which forms 1-hydroxyalkyl radicals. This arises because [Form

The extinction coefficients and the decay kinetics of I2 and (SCN)2 have been characterized over the 15-90C-temperature range. The extinction coefficients of I2 at 385 and 725 nm were determined to be 10,000 and 2560M cm , respectively, based on the

The p K a of the hydroxyl radical was measured over the 20–80°C temperature range. At 20°C, the p K a was 11.84 and fell to 10.81 at 80°C. The dissociation constant for the ozonide anion (O⊘ 3 ⇌O 2 +O⊘) was found to be 5.5 × 10 -7 mol dm

When oxidized dithiothreitol (DTT-ox), oxidized gluthathione (GSSG), or dithiodiproprionic acid is radiolysed in N2O-saturated sodium formate solutions, a chain reduction of the disulphide to the corresponding thiol occurs. The chain propagating step

The optical spectra of the charged ions obtained from γ-irradiation of dilute alkyl mercaptans, sulfides, and disulfides in a variety of dilute rigid glasses are measured at 77 K. The photochemical stability of these ions is determined. A new photoc
