To lower the iron losses of the hot metal desulphurisation (HMD) process, slag modifiers can be added to the slag. Slag modifiers decrease the apparent viscosity of the HMD slag. Most common slag modifiers in industry contain fluoride as a fluidiser.

The influence of aluminium content on the hot ductility behaviour in V-N steels was investigated. Cylindrical specimens were subjected to thermal cycles and strain rates approximating those experienced by a conventional slab surface during continuous

The influence of the strain sequence during slab hot rolling (also known as “roughing”) on the evolution of austenite in plain carbon, C-Mn-V and C-Mn-Nb-Ti-V steels was investigated. Reheating and roughing simulations were conducted in a Bähr d

The effect of thermal processing (TMP) parameters on grain growth in a low C - Mn steel and a C - Mn steel microalloyed with Nb, Ti and V were compared as part of a wider study on grain growth in microalloyed steels. The grain growth rate was found t

Supported cobalt Fischer–Tropsch catalysts are characteristically nanoparticulate and the reduced SiC supported catalyst was found to contain both HCP and FCC polymorphs. This is reflected in the powder XRD patterns and generally there is a poor fi

The key metallurgical parameters affecting the incidence of coil collapse (soft slump) of C–Mn steels has been investigated using industrial data and laboratory simulation. Runout table (ROT) cooling/coiling simulations were performed on a Gleeble

The influence of a low Ti addition (∼0·01%) on the hot ductility of Nb containing HSLA steels has been examined. For conventional cooling conditions in which an average cooling rate from the melting point to the test temperature was used, the duct

The influence of deformation parameters and composition on flow stress behaviour of boron-containing steels is described. High boron steels displayed a consistent flow stress during finishing due to the boron concentration at austenite grain boundari

Cooling of solidified titania slag in air results in the oxidation of a pseudobrookite phase (M3O5 where M = Fe, Ti) to form phases that are associated with the disintegration of the solid slag. Extensive disintegration of the slag at temperatures be
