Modeling and experiments of two-wave mixing and energy-transfer based on accurate measurements of pump-induced refractive index variations were performed. Results indicate that energy transfer exceeding 50% is possible under high pumping conditions.

The refractive index changes which can be induced in pumped Nd3+ and Yb3+ doped laser materials have been measured using two pump-probe techniques. Transient signal analysis allows to discriminate electronic and thermal contributions.
