A wide variety of fiber devices can be created by adding special coatings on tapered sections of optical fibers. In this work we present the fundamentals for the fabrication of tapered optical fibers coated with functional polymers. The required aspe

We demonstrate optical fiber sensors based on highly coupled multicore fibers operating with the optical Vernier effect. The sensors are constructed using a simple device incorporating single-mode fibers (SMFs) and a segment of a multicore fiber. In

We demonstrate tunable microring resonators (TMRs) based on light-activated functional polymer coatings deposited on glass optical fibers. TMRs were fabricated using two layers of polydimethylsiloxane-based compounds: one incorporating an azobenzene

The power budget and costs are the two primary concerns for access networks. A major challenge is to minimize upstream power combining loss to increase the power budget. Spatial modes multiplexing offers the possibility to minimize upstream combining

We report the optimization of a few-mode fiber, adapted to multiple-input multiple-output mode division multiplexing, that supports 9 LP modes (15 spatial modes). The fiber is fabricated using standard multimode processes, which allows for tight proc

Thermocapillary flow has proven to be a good alternative to induce and control the motion of drops and bubbles in microchannels. Temperature gradients are usually established by implanting metallic heaters adjacent to the channel or by including a la
