Abstract Disturbances such as outbreaks of herbivorous insects and pathogens can devastate unique habitats and directly reduce biodiversity. The foundation tree species Tsuga canadensis (eastern hemlock) is declining due to infestation by the nonnati

The invasive insect pest Adelges tsugae (Hemlock Woolly Adelgid) threatens the ecologically unique Tsuga canadensis (Eastern Hemlock)-dominated forest type throughout its range. Relatively little is known about how the loss of this forest type will a

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), CERN's latest accelerator project, will use high-field superconducting magnets operating below 2 K. As a consequence, 22 km of the 27 km circumference machine will be housed in evacuated cryostats. The design and opti

An OFHC copper chamber was exposed to 3.75 keV critical energy synchrotron radiation for a total dose of of 2.7×1023 photons/m. After this dose, photodesorption yields down to 10−5 molecules/photon were reached for H2, CO, and CO2 and 10−7 mol/p

In high energy particle accelerators where bunches of electrons, positrons and protons are accelerated to energies in the GeV range, and in the near future up to many TeV for protons in the LHC and SSC projects, the pressure requirements are typicall

The two rings of the LHC beam vacuum system have a total length of about 54 km of which almost 48 km will be at 1.9 K, the temperature of the superconducting magnets. The total synchrotron radiation power emitted by the two beams is 0.41 Wm/sup -1/.

We describe the design for the vacuum vessel and vacuum pumping system for a 1.2 GeV electron storage ring for light source applications. The hybrid vacuum vessel design consists of eight extruded aluminum (6063‐T4) dipole chambers curved to the ri
The synchrotron radiation induced neutral gas desorption coefficients for Al, stainless steel and Cu have been measured by exposing test vacuum chambers made from those materials to 2.95 keV critical energy synchrotron radiation in a dedicated beam l
