The foraging activity of the leaf-cutting ant Atta laevigata in an early successional area near Manaus, Brazil, was monitored over a period of 18 mo. Four Cecropia species were growing in that area and all were associated with the ant Azteca alfari.

The speed of glomerular filtration (GFR) was studied in 16 healthy newborns and in 19 with idiopathic respiratory insufficiency syndrome (IRDS). It turned to be 30.22 +/- 10.23 ml/min/1.73 m2 for healthy cases and of 17.49 +/- 9.71 for those with IRD
