The Nansen Legacy Report Series; No. 38 (2023): Mooring Service Cruise (MSC) 2022
The main objective of the cruise was to retrieve and deploy ocean moorings in the north-western Barents Sea and on the continental slope north of Kvitøya for the Nansen Legacy and A-TWAIN projects. A secondary objective was to perform hydrographic s

The northern Barents Sea is a cold, seasonally ice-covered Arctic shelf sea region that has experienced major warming and sea ice loss in recent decades. Here, a 2-year observational record from two ocean moorings provides new knowledge about the sea

Climate change is especially strong in the region of the Arctic Ocean, and will have an important impact on its thermo-haline structure. We analyze the results of a hindcast simulation of a new 3D ocean model of the Arctic and North Atlantic oceans f

Fjords along the western Antarctic Peninsula are episodically exposed to strong winds flowing down marine-terminating glaciers and out over the ocean. These wind events could potentially be an important mechanism for the ventilation of fjord waters.

Sea ice concentration along the continental margin of the Arctic Ocean is influenced by a multitude of factors, including local freezing and melting due to atmospheric forcing, lateral advection of sea ice by winds and ocean currents, and melting fro

The Nansen Legacy Report Series.
The current research focus on the northern Barents Sea and the adjacent Nansen Basin has highlighted a need for common reference terms when discussing water mass origins and modification processes. Several relevant water mass definitions have been pr
