At sufficiently low temperatures, electron bubbles (negative ions) can become trapped on quantized vortices in superfluid helium. Previously, the escape of electron bubbles from vortices by thermal excitation and through quantum tunneling has been st

It is well known that the Bernoulli effect modifies the shape of gas bubbles moving through a liquid. In this paper we investigate the influence of the Bernoulli pressure on the shape of electron bubbles moving through superfluid helium. We show that

In a recent paper, we have calculated the effect of thermal and zero‐point fluctuations on the 1S to 1P optical transition of the electron bubble in superfluid helium. We obtained a line shape that was in good agreement with the experimental result

In recent work, we have developed a new technique for the study of the properties of electron bubbles (negative ions) in liquid helium. We use ultrasound to measure the critical negative pressure Pc at which an electron bubble becomes unstable and ex

In an experiment to investigate the possibility of using superfluid helium as a detection medium for low energy solar neutrinos, we have studied the currents produced by a radioactive source in a helium cell having a liquid/vacuum interface at 50 mK.

Picosecond ultrasonics has become a widely used metrology tool in the semiconductor device industry. It provides an accurate method for the measurement of the thickness of thin films, can determine the quality of the bonding between a film and a subs

The transmission of energy across the interface of a gold film with bulk sapphire has been studied using a metallic magnetic calorimeter. The transfer of energy by both high frequency and thermal phonons is found to be dependent upon the thickness of

We discuss the use of the picosecond ultrasonics technique for characterizing several challenging processes which are common in sub-0.18 micron processes. Specific processes considered are reactive TaN, RTP-CoSi2, and damascene copper. We describe th

The HERON project is an R&D effort to create a detector suitable for real-time, high rate measurement of neutrinos from both the p-p and 7Be reactions in the Sun using superfluid helium as the target medium. Progress on studies of particle detection

Using the pump and probe technique we have observed oscillations of photoinduced transmission in thin films of a‐As2Te3. The oscillations have periods of 70‐240 ps, depending on sample thickness. We ascribe these to phonon propagation in the film
